Discover Local Talent: Bergen County's Annual Art Show

Maya Angelou said, “Art is a bridge between people”. Bergen County's Art in the Park is more than just an art show; it's a celebration of community, creativity, and the rich artistic talent within our County. For over 50 years, this annual event has been a beloved tradition, attracting artists and art enthusiasts alike.

This October 19th, 2024, Van Saun County Park transformed into an art gallery hosting hundreds of art pieces, live music and good food. From charcoal to photography, Bergen residents proudly displayed their art to hundreds of visitors.

The Music

From 12:30pm to 3:00pm, we were treated to beautiful jazz. As lead singer we had, Cynthia Soriano vocalist, educator, and composer who carries on the fabled musicians’ tradition of calling Teaneck, NJ her home. Her rich tone and unique phrasing echo the influences of Carmen McRae, Abbey Lincoln, Shirley Horn and Billie Holiday. Cynthia has assembled some of the top jazz musicians on the scene. The players include: Paul Beaudry — bass; Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax — drums; Greg Glassman — trumpet; Thomas Linger — piano; and Justin Robinson — alto saxophone.

The Art

The never ending dialog of artists. I had the chance to chat with Jonathan Yubi, a talented artist from Bergenfield.

He takes inspiration from socio-political events in American and Latin American History. Jonathan has studied arts and has a BFA from Lehman College. His ability to dissect history comes to life in his paintings.

Jonathan's work is a testament to the power of art to inspire, educate, and connect us with the past. It's a reminder that history isn't just a series of dates and events; it's a living, breathing story that continues to shape our world.

I spoke next with, Luis Medrano, resident of Rutherford, who is joining us for the second time. Luis is a seasoned Computer Animator. He is inspired by surrealist artist Salvador Dali and “biomechanical” artist H. R. Giger.

While his primary medium is pencil on canvas and paper, Luis isn't afraid to think outside the box. He's experimented with drawing on electric guitars, transforming these musical instruments into unexpected canvases. Surrealism and motion are recurring themes in his artwork, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking visual experience.
